LINCOLN SQUARE — Is there such a thing as too much cowbell?
Find out from one of the most successful drummers in the business today. Percussionist Glenn Kotche, who has been a member of Wilco since 2001, will take up a four-night residency at the Old Town School of Folk Music Nov. 4-7, conducting a trio of workshops in advance of a solo concert.
A composer as well as a musician, Kotche has written pieces for the Kronos Quartet and Silk Road Ensemble among others, while also pounding the skins for Wilco on critically acclaimed albums including "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and "A Ghost Is Born," as well as his own solo discs.
At Old Town School, Kotche's workshops — open not just to drummers but anyone interested in the creative process — will include discussions on the differences between composing and playing for classical versus rock groups.
During an instrument and sound sculpture course, Kotche will teach participants how to build their own individual piece of percussive sound art, which they can take home.
The residency culminates in a concert at Maurer Hall, 8 p.m., Nov. 7, 4544 N. Lincoln Ave. Tickets cost $25 and are available for purchase online.
Tickets to the workshops, Nov. 4-6, range in cost from $25 to $55, with discounts for Old Town School members. Click here for registration information.
