WICKER PARK —  At four-ounces each, the bagels at Brobagel — scheduled to open Friday —are not oversized and full of air but dense and chewy "like real bagels," says Andy Jacobs.

Then again, Jacobs is admittedly biased: his brother Bill is the owner of the new takeout and delivery spot in Wicker Park.

"The shine, the size, it's not full of air but it is dense," said Andy Jacobs, one of four Jacobs brothers who are "on the consumption end" of the bagel business.

Jacobs said during a test run this week that the golden days for traditional New York Style bagels were in the mid to late '80s when his brothers were running Jacobs Bros. Bagels. But in the late '90s and early aughts, bagels became "more like bread-shaped like bagels."

Scheduled to open at 6 a.m. Friday,  Brobagel is adjacent to Piece Brewery and Pizzeria, which is owned by Bill Jacobs, who moved the bagel shop into the former Salon Blue storefront about six months ago.

Mixed, boiled and baked onsite, Brobagel's bagels will cost $1.49 each or $17.99 for a dozen.
