BRIDGEPORT — A neighborhood watch group is distancing itself from a promotion that's getting circulated throughout Bridgeport.

Fliers recently taped to the front doors of local homes tout a coupon for a free home security system "compliments of Neighborhood Watch Program."

It's that phrasing that has led the neighborhood's actual watchdogs, the Bridgeport Citizens Group, to clear the air: They're not affiliated with the promotion at all.

"They have no connection with us whatsoever. If they have a connection with a neighborhood watch program somewhere else out there, they should not be passing out advertisements in Bridgeport without having spoke to us. And we don't support individual companies in that way," Bridgeport Citizens Group co-founder Dan Pugh said.

The home security company that distributed the flier, the Broadview-based Security Solutions Inc., is an authorized dealer of ADT security systems. They say it's all a misunderstanding.

In a statement, owner Brett Blessen said a "brand new sales agent misunderstood the intended use for this promotional flier. We apologize for the misunderstanding and any inconvenience it caused for residents and the Bridgeport Citizens Group."

ADT spokeswoman Cheryl Stopnick said "the agent should not have added "neighborhood watch program" to the flier and should not have distributed it door to door.

"To clarify, this is not a scam: Security Solutions is an ADT dealer in good standing and the offer is legitimate and will be honored," she said.

Records show Security Solutions Inc. was recently granted a business license with the state's department of financial and professional regulations. It's active until August 2017.

The company has been a member of Better Business Bureau since 2013.
