LOGAN SQUARE — A Logan Square neighborhood group has one last hurdle before work on the community’s first tree inventory can begin with new trees planted along Humboldt Boulevard.

The project needs $10,000, according to Logan Square Preservation organizers, which will allow the group to lock down matching grants worth an additional $15,000.

The group hosted a local planting campaign Saturday and will hold a fundraiser Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at Longman & Eagle’s off-site bar, 2657 N. Kedzie Ave.

Community leaders and tree experts at the 30-year-old volunteer-run preservation society said new trees need to be planted to overcome the steady loss of some 15,000 older trees brought down in the last three years, including many that were victims of the emerald ash borer.

Residents also can donate to the neighborhood’s tree fund at GoFundMe.com.
