HYDE PARK — Artist Candace Hunter tackles the issue of injustice with a series of portraits of hooded figures at the South Side Community Art Center.

The “Hooded Truths” exhibit runs through Sunday at the art center, 3831 S. Michigan Ave.

The exhibit features 33 images of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr. and others hooded to recall Trayvon Martin, a black 17-year-old high school student whose fatal shooting in 2012 became a symbol of the racial biases in the justice system, Hunter said.

“The hoodie has become synonymous with the continuation of injustice,” Hunter says in her artist’s statement. Trayvon's "unjust death is becoming a beacon for truth.”

The exhibit includes a rendering of a hooded Hadiya Pendleton, the King College Prep student killed in 2013.

The art center is open noon-5 p.m. Wednesdays-Fridays; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays and 1-5 p.m. and Sundays.
