Wicker Area Weekend: GardenWalk, Comedy Expo, West Fest Pop-Up Roller Rink

BUCKTOWN — Looking for something to do this weekend? You are in luck, as there is no shortage of fun events taking place in and around the Wicker Park area. 

Here are some of the highlights:

Friday

8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.  Movie in the Park: Moonrise Kingdom. Bring a blanket and enjoy a flick about two smitten 12-year-olds who run away together as a violent storm threatens to make it difficult for authorities and their parents to find them. Holstein Park, 2200 N. Oakley Ave. in Bucktown.

Saturday

11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Bucktown GardenWalk, Petting Zoo and Wine Tasting. Go on a walking (or trolley) tour of 77 neighborhood gardens while identifying 100 trees along the way. In addition to gardens, the slate of activities includes a petting zoo with free donkey rides for young ones at Lottie's Pub, 1925 W. Cortland St. and live music and wine tastings (5 to 9 p.m. Sat/Sun) at Club Lucky, 1824 W. Wabansia Ave.

New this year is a social media component, so use the hashtag #BucktownGardenWalk on Twitter to share your GardenWalk adventures.  Admission is a suggested donation of $10 per person and includes a guide book with a map of gardens and trees. 11 a.m.  8th Annual Tour de Fat Bike Parade and Fest.  Get dressed up in a wacky costume, hop on your bike and go on a 5-mile jaunt through the area.  Meet at in Palmer Square at Kedzie Boulevard and Palmer St. in Logan Square.

Noon to 10 p.m. 10th Annual West Fest.  On tap are two stages of live music (lineup here), food and merchandise vendors, a large kids' and pet fest, a BMX bike demo, a live Women's Roller Derby (in an empty lot at 1822-50 W. Chicago Ave.) and more.  Music headliners include Death, Lee Fields and The Expressions. The fest is free, with a $5 suggested donation. West Fest, along Chicago Avenue between Damen and Wood Street. 

7:30 to 9 p.m. Comedy Expo: Aparna Nancheria and Sean Patton.  Get your laugh on during a weekend-long celebration of comedy that's bringing 60-plus stand-up comics to Logan Square, Wicker Park and Lakeview. Hosted by Goodrich Gevaart, Saturday night's headliners will be preceded by talent from Danielle Radford, Ian Douglas Terry, Liza Treyger and Tommy Mac.  Tickets are $20. The Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia Ave. in East Bucktown.

10 to 11:30 p.m.  Comedy Expo:  The S--- Show.   Hosted by "Hot Dog Man" Keith Paesel, the laughs continue inside of the Collaboraction Theatre, with jokes from Kelsey Huff, Derek Sheen and more. Tickets are $5Flat Iron Building, 1579 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Wicker Park.


Sunday

8 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Wicker Park Farmers Market. Go early for the best picks from several vendors offering fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, cheeses, beef jerky, sauces, pasta, flowers, crepes and more. New as of last week: Sour cherries from Seedling Fruit. 1425 N. Damen Ave. in Wicker Park.

11 a.m.  Symphony Sounds String Quartet's "Sounds of Eastern Europe."   Returning to Wicker Park for their fifth season, the talented musicians from Symphony Sounds will present their second of four summer showcases celebrating music from around the world.  Saturday's concert will spotlight Romanian and Hungarian compositions. Free, southwest corner of park at Schiller/Damen in Wicker Park.

11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Bucktown Garden Walk, cont.

Noon to 6 p.m.   Pop-Up Roller Skating Rink at West FestA large empty lot will be transformed into a "Pop Up Roller Rink" all day Sunday.  Stop by for skate lessons, theme skates, games, music and more. Bring your own skates or rent a pair. Empty lot at 1822-50 W. Chicago Ave. in West Town.

Noon to 10 p.m.  10th Annual West Fest, cont.

Noon to 4:30 p.m.   Outdoor World Cup Final Game Viewing Party.   Watch the final game between Germany and Argentina at West Fest's East Stage. Free, suggested $5 donation.  Chicago Avenue and Wood Street in West Town.
