CHICAGO — A 34-year-old man was fatally shot before he crashed his vehicle into a pole just after midnight Thursday in River West, officials said.

Around 12:20 a.m., police were called to the scene of a car crash in the 1000 block of West Ancona Street and found the man shot several times in his back. He was taken to Northwestern Hospital, where he died, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.

The man, identified as Sonny Ortiz, struck a pole with his vehicle after he was shot and was pronounced dead at 12:53 a.m. Thursday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.

The man is a documented gang member. No one is in custody for the shooting, Alfaro said.
