LAKEVIEW — The Caribou Coffee in Boystown will close its doors June 27 and reopen later this summer as Peet's Coffee & Tea.

The move comes as part of a national restructuring strategy announced last year.

A spokeswoman for Peet's said the California-based coffee chain would open 20 locations in Chicago and its suburbs later this year. She refused to offer specifics, but said most of the stores would be in former Caribou shops.

In the Boystown Caribou at 3500 N. Halsted St., staff created a "Chalk Thoughts" board, posing the question: "What is your favorite Caribou memory?"

Some notes were earnest ("coming here with the love of my life"), others funny ("watching awkward Grindr dates").

Peet's couldn't provide an exact timeline for the transition, but employees at Caribou said they expected to be up and running by late summer. Peet's plans to hire "former Caribou employees in good standing," its spokeswoman said.
