CHICAGO — A Far South Side man was charged with five counts of attempted murder following a shootout near his home that wounded two police officers Friday night.

Malik Shabazz, 29, allegedly opened fire on the officers after the vehicle he was a passenger in was pulled over about 11:30 Friday night in the 9300 block of South Wallace Avenue in Washington Heights.

The police officers returned fire, wounding Shabazz, who lives on the block, and the driver. Shabazz was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he remains. The female driver was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park.

A 38-year-old officer was shot in the leg and taken to Christ in good condition. A 31-year-old officer was injured when a bullet pierced his bullet-proof vest. He was released from Christ.

Shabazz has a court hearing scheduled for Sunday, police said.
