CHATHAM — The next election is five months away, but state Rep. Elgie Sims Jr. (D-Chicago) said he wants to make sure everyone who wants to vote have the opportunity to do so.

The state lawmaker, whose district includes Chatham, is sponsoring a free voter training class from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Star Missionary Baptist Church, 9231 S. Cottage Grove Ave.

The training class would focus on showing registered voters how to sign up unregistered voters. Co-sponsoring the event is Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and the Pastors United for Change.

Sims said one of the biggest barriers to citizens voting is a lack of valid identification and the misconception that a criminal background check is conducted on those who register.
