EDGEWATER — A real estate company plans to build a six-story, self-storage facility in a vacant lot on Devon Avenue.

Banner Storage Group, a subsidiary of suburban Northbrook-based Banner Apartments, bought the property at 1807 W. Devon Ave. for $1.6 million last month, according to property records.

The previously foreclosed land on the south side of Devon abuts the Metra tracks and sits just to the east of Ridge Avenue.

Banner Executive Vice President John Nikolich said by phone that after the facility is built it would be managed by a national or regional brand, such as Public Storage or Extra Space Storage.

He said the company expects to begin construction in July and finish the project by spring 2015.

The 118,000-square-foot facility will include 1,200 units, he said.

"Self-storage is desirable" in Edgewater, he said.

The company has also begun work to construct a storage facility near Boston. It's also looking at potential sites in Miami.
