PORTAGE PARK — Police issued a community alert Friday after a man tried to lure a 15-year-old girl on her way to school into his white SUV near Chopin Park Thursday morning.

The girl was walking west on Roscoe Street around 8 a.m. when a man called to her from the door of a white SUV and told her "to get in the car," according to the alert issued by Jefferson Park police district officials.

The girl continued on her way to school and thought she saw the same car near the front entrance of her school when she arrived there, according to the alert.

Police are looking for a white or Hispanic man with an olive complexion between the ages of 27 and 35 with short brown hair, brown eyes and a goatee. The man is between 5-feet-7-inches tall and 5-feet-10-inches tall and weighs between 150 and 170 pounds. He was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans, according to the alert.

Police urged people in the area to walk in pairs, to avoid talking to strangers or approaching strange cars and to travel only in well-lit and busy areas. Suspicious people or activity should be reported to 911 immediately.

Detectives ask anyone with information to call 312-744-8200.
