CHINATOWN — Cars parked in one of the neighborhood's busiest intersections are getting targeted for smash-and-grab burglaries, police said.

The spate of burglaries took place throughout April, when the thieves broke the windows of cars parked in the 2100 blocks of South Archer Avenue and South China Place, and stole laptops, backpacks and "other items left in plain view in the vehicle," police said.

There have been at least eight similar burglaries in a three-week span beginning April 1, according to a police news alert. Most took place in the daytime hours.

Authorities are reminding motorists to keep personal items of plain view and to park in well-lit locations. Victims of burglaries are urged to refrain from touching anything to avoid sullying the evidence.

Anyone with information is asked to call Area Central detectives at 312-747-8382.
