BACK OF THE YARDS — A gunman wounded four people in a Tuesday afternoon shooting in Back of the Yards, police said.

The shooting is the latest in a spate of violence in the neighborhood that has left area residents worried for their safety.

"Really, it's beyond scary. It's beyond dangerous out here," said Diana Cruz, who lives on the same block as Tuesday's shooting and a Friday shooting that claimed the life of 21-year-old Martavian Emery.

The latest incident occurred in the 5400 block of South Winchester Avenue about 4:36 p.m. Tuesday, according to Officer Stacey Cooper, a police spokeswoman.

A 33-year-old man was taken to Stroger Hospital with bullet wounds to his right calf, right thigh and left hand. A 41-year-old man went to the same hospital after being shot in both legs. Both are in good condition.

A 50-year-old man shot in his buttocks and a 47-year-old woman shot in her left thigh are in stable condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.

On Friday afternoon, a gunman fired into an apartment in the same block killing Emery and wounding a 19-year-old woman. Police wouldn't comment if there was a connection in the shootings.

Cruz said she heard six "loud pops" Tuesday afternoon and ducked down in her home for safety.

"It's terrible you never know where the shots could be coming from," Cruz said. "There's been a lot of shootings" since she moved to the neighborhood six years ago, she added.
