CHICAGO — The Lincoln Park Zoo is celebrating the birth of spring, literally.

The zoo announced on Thursday the birth of a klipspringer calf. Klipspringer, which is Afrikaans for "rock jumper," is a type of dwarf antelope that populates areas of central and eastern Africa.

Visitors cannot yet see the calf, born March 30, but zoo officials said she is eating well and growing normally.

The calf joins her sister Arya, who also lives at the zoo. Staff at the zoo determined the calf's mother could not provide adequate care and hand-rearing is in her best interest for now.

The birth is the "first of many births expected throughout the zoo this year," zoo officials said.
