UPTOWN — The owner of Ba Le Sandwiches is remodeling a building next to his Uptown location with plans to open a bakery.

A city permit authorizing the renovation effort could be seen above the doorway at 5018 N. Broadway, adjacent to Ba Le, 5016 N. Broadway. The new bakery will be called "Ba Le Desserts & Drinks," according to the city.

Employees at Ba Le, which has locations in Chinatown and the Loop, confirmed their boss was planning to add a bakery to the Ba Le brand, but Ba Le's owner couldn't be reached for comment.

The building that would house the bakery was Ba Le's Uptown location before it moved one door south in 2010.

Ba Le specializes in banh mi sandwiches, a Vietnamese sandwich that includes marinated meat, hot peppers and pickled vegetables on a French baguette.
