CHICAGO — One person is dead and three others injured after a van crashed into a CTA bus and caught fire in Calumet Heights Wednesday.

No passengers were on the bus.

The crash happened about 12:45 a.m. in the 9300 block of South Commercial Avenue when the van slammed into the bus at an intersection, police said, citing preliminary information.

The van, which was carrying three people, burst into flames. Citizens were able to pull two passengers to safety, while the fire department removed the driver.

The driver, a man in his 20s, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Officials did not know the man's identity early Wednesday.

The passengers, whose ages and genders were not available, were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Advocate Christ Medical Center in "unknown condition," police said.

The bus driver was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital in "stable condition," according to police.

The police department's major accidents unit is investigating.
