CHICAGO — A man has been charged in the East Garfield Park shooting that killed 42-year-old Darren Ray, known to relatives as the neighborhood "peacemaker."

Eugene Andrews, 37, of the 2400 block of West Lexington Street, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and for having an outstanding warrant.

Police believe Andrews fatally shot Ray multiple times about 9:30 a.m. Friday in the 2900 block of West Flournoy Street. Officers offered few details about the shooting.

Relatives said Ray was a devoted father of five, who tried to break up fights in the neighborhood.

"If there was a gang fight, he would come in and stop it," said Reathia Ray, the victim's older sister. "His name rang throughout this neighborhood in a good way."

Andrews is slated to appear in bond court Tuesday.
