LAKEVIEW — A Mediterranean restaurant near the Belmont Red Line stop has closed but will soon be replaced by another falafel-serving joint.

The owner of Sinbad's Restaurant, 921 W. Belmont Ave., sold the business and closed last week, and Wicker Park's Falafel & Grill will be opening in its place, according to Ald. Tom Tunney's (44th) office. Tunney owns the building.

Like Sinbad's, Falafel & Grill serves Mediterranean fast foods like falafel, shawermas and lentil soup, with nearly all items priced under $10.

Falafel & Grill has been open in Wicker Park, 1317 N. Milwaukee Ave., for nearly three years. Owner Baker Ali was not available for comment.

Ali's not the only one opening a Mediterranean restaurant on the block just east of Belmont. BlitzLake Capital's building at 851 W. Belmont Ave., formerly home to J. Toguri Mercantile Co. gift shop, will be housing an I Dream of Falafel once construction is complete.
