CHICAGO — A Wicker Park woman was arrested after leaving five dogs alone in her car for several hours Friday evening.

Maureen Gaffney, 51, of the 2600 block of West North Avenue, was charged with violating the state's Humane Care for Animals Act and is due in court May 1 on a misdemeanor charge, police said.

A witness told police that Gaffney had parked the car in the 2400 block of North Artesian Avenue about 4:30 p.m.

The witness called police six hours later as the dogs were still there unattended.

After authorities forced the car door open, the dogs were taken to Chicago Animal Care and Control. Gaffney was arrested after she was found nearby, police said.
