CHICAGO — A West Garfield Park man died after being shot in an alley near his home Friday night, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 7:20 p.m. in the 4300 block of West Jackson Boulevard shortly before which two men in an alley, ages 52 and 53, were talking to someone in a maroon-colored minivan, said Officer Jose Estrada, a police spokesman.

Shots were fired from inside the van wounding both of the men.

Eugene Matheny, 52, of the 4200 block of West Adams Street was shot in his back and pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 7:55 p.m., according to Estrada and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

The 53-year-old man was shot in his left thigh and is in critical condition at the same hospital.
