ENGLEWOOD — A 20-year-old man was shot by police on the South Side Monday night after authorities said he waved a gun at officers.

About 9:50 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a call of a man with a gun in the 6100 block of South Sangamon Street.

The 20-year-old man ran into a home on the block when police arrived. Officers chased the man inside to the balcony of the home, according to a police statement.

On the balcony, the man, who was holding a gun, began "waving the weapon at the officers in an apparent agitated state," according to a police statement.

After police tried to talk the man down, the 20-year-old pointed the gun at officers, causing them to fire, police said.

The man was taken to an area hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound, police said.
