CHICAGO — All around the city Friday, math geeks and pastry fans will honor pi(e).

Friday is Pi Day, March 14, an annual day celebrating one of math's most irrational numbers, 3.14.

Bakeries around town are commemorating the day by baking or offering deals on their desserts.

Monica Metzler, executive director of the Illinois Science Council, reached out to several bakeries around Chicago to honor the day.

"We cast a really wide net. I've tried to expand the list every year," said Metzler, whose organization has done Pi Day outreach since 2009. "They take Pi Day about as seriously as you can take Pi Day."

The festivities aren't limited to round pastries. Several pizza shops are offering deals, and some bars are joining in the geeky festivities too.

And then there's the Pi Day Pi K Fun Run, touching off from the city's three Fleet Feet Sports locations. Between the three races spanning 3.14 km, there will be 628 participants, about the equivalent of 200 times pi.

"It's all about pi," Metzler said.
