CHICAGO — A Chicago police officer was shot in his head while executing a drug warrant in Calumet Heights Sunday night.

The officer, 34, was wounded in the 2700 block of East 92nd Street about 8:45 p.m. when a tactical team was executing a warrant, police said.

Police entered the building from two entryways of the home, where a suspect lived in the basement. When the team entered the building, someone fired a gunshot in the direction of the officers. It ricocheted off a piece of wood, striking the officer, an 11-year veteran, in his head.

He was taken to Trinity Hospital, and then to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was escorted by a procession of emergency vehicles. He was in "stable" condition, police said, and was alert and speaking to family and colleagues.

The officer has since been released from the hospital, cops said Monday morning.

Six people were taken into custody for questioning, police said. A weapon was recovered. Police fired no shots.

The wounded officer has received 245 department awards and is assigned to the South Chicago district, police said.

Police continue to investigate, and ask anyone with information to contact detectives at 312-747-8271.
