CALUMET HEIGHTS — One man is in custody after police found drugs and guns while searching a home on the South Side Monday night.

About 10:30 p.m., Gresham District officers executed a search warrant in the 9200 block of South Merrill Avenue. Two pit bulls rushed officers as they entered the basement in the home, and officers shot the dogs, said Officer Amina Greer, a police spokesman.

One dog was killed, and the other was injured, Greer said.

The target of the warrant, a 41-year-old man, was arrested after officers found him with two guns and drugs. Police seized illegal pills and cash, and charges are pending in the case, Greer said.

No officers were injured during the search.
