UPTOWN — Organizers for Vintage Garage Chicago said the popular flea market is returning to Uptown and Edgewater this spring with plans for a bigger and better operation in its third year.

"It just keeps taking off," organizer Melissa Strands said. "It seems like we get a little more attention every year. This is our third year, and we fully expect it to be our best."

The event gathers vintage and antique dealers under one roof once a month from April to October, usually at 5051 N. Broadway in Uptown, but sometimes at 1134 W. Granville Ave. in Edgewater as well.

The first year Vintage Garage Chicago had about 50 vendors each day, last year it was about 75, and this year "our goal is to get to 100 vendors," Strands said.

Strand said she's excited for the 2014 season-opening April 27 "Style Ride" themed flea market, which she said will include Ald. Harry Osterman (48th) leading a procession of people wearing vintage outfits while riding "the coolest vintage bikes."

"Everybody got on them in a group and took off and rode their bikes along the waterfront and came back and shopped, and it was really, really cool," Strands said, describing last year's Style Ride. "So we're hoping that's even bigger this year."

But the most interesting theme, in Strands' opinion, will be the September theme: "1984."

"We're not talking just about the '80s; we're talking 1984," she said. "I think if you look at 1984, and you look at the music, it was a pretty important time. I think we can specifically target music that was popular that month, and just what everybody was doing, like John Hughes movies."
