CHICAGO — A man accused of robbing and shooting a man Wednesday in Chatham was arrested after officers heard gunfire and saw him running from the scene, police said.

Melvin L. Martin, 29, of the 7100 block of South Whipple Avenue, was charged with attempted first-degree murder and armed robbery with discharge of a firearm.

Police initially said that a 27-year-old man was sitting in a parked car in the 800 block of East 82nd Street about 1:05 a.m. when another man walked up and started to rob him.

The assailant grabbed the victim's wallet and fired a gun several times as he took off, striking the man in his lower back and grazing his head, police said.

Officers heard the gunshots and saw Martin fleeing the scene, police said Thursday.

Police caught up to Martin and found a gun, they said. The victim identified Martin as the shooter, and he was arrested, according to police.

The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, police said.

Martin is expected to appear in bond court on Thursday.
