SOUTH SHORE — Two women were hospitalized Tuesday morning after a fire broke out in the South Shore neighborhood.

Firefighters responded to a blaze about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday in the 7000 block of South Merrill Avenue, Chicago Fire Department Chief Joe Roccasalva said.

The fire erupted in a third-floor apartment of the seven-story building and was struck out by 9 a.m.

Two women were transported to local hospitals, Roccasalva said. One woman was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Jackson Park Hospital.

Another woman was taken in fair-to-serious condition to South Shore Hospital. A third person refused medical treatment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Roccasalva said.
