CHICAGO — Residents are safe after a fire broke out in the basement of a 16-story Lakeview high-rise Thursday night.

Firefighters were called to the scene in the 3200 block of North Lake Shore Drive after 10 p.m., according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.

The blaze was contained to a storage unit in the basement of the apartment building, authorities said, but sent smoke spiraling to upper floors through elevator shafts.

Crews responding asked residents to stay in their apartments and call 911 if they needed help.

No injuries were reported, according to police, and no one was forced out of their apartment.

By 11:40 p.m., the fire had been struck out, but light smoke remained in several stairwells, officials said.

Firefighters did not find smoke in halls, a spokesman said, and after a ventilation process, the building was considered "struck out and secured" by midnight.

As of Friday morning, it was still unclear whether the fire originated in the storage unit. Fire Department officials were investigating.
