GOLD COAST — After 18 years at 43 E. Oak St., The Denim Lounge and sister store Madison & Friends are closing for good.

Owner Dave Shelist said retail megaliths like Barney's, Tod's, Prada, Furla and Scoop NYC edged out the flagship clothing store in recent years.

"With all the new, high-end stores that are coming to Oak Street, it's just harder for an independent boutique to operate," Shelist said. "The shopper that is coming to Oak Street is looking for international designer brands, not necessarily denim."

Starting Feb. 11, the Oak Street shop will launch its "Leaving Oak Street Sale" to clear some inventory. Whatever remains will move to Denim Lounge's Roscoe Village location — the one closer to the Shelist family's home, "which is doing really well."

"It's also a matter of convenience to streamline down to that one store," Shelist said.

All merchandise at The Denim Lounge and Madison & Friends will be 30 to 80 percent off, as marked. Items at the Roscoe Village shop and on the store's website aren't included in the sale.
