AUBURN GRESHAM — A man was shot in his chest Wednesday outside Clara Barton Elementary School, about the time the school was scheduled to dismiss, police said.

Some students were still inside the building at 5:35 p.m. and would only be let out in the care of their guardians, school officials said.

The shooting in the 7600 block of South Wolcott Avenue occurred about 3:45 p.m., the same time the school day ends, according to the Chicago Public Schools website.

Sandra Hogan, a crossing guard near the school, said she heard about six shots before students were scheduled to leave.

"Are you serious? Near the school, that's crazy," Hogan said. "That's the world we're living in ... a corrupt, disturbed world."

The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital, police said.
