CHICAGO — A 1-year-old girl is in critical condition after her father threw her to the ground in Logan Square Sunday night, police said.

The 21-year-old man hurt the baby during an argument with the girl's mother in the 2800 block of North Spaulding Avenue about 10:40 p.m., according to Officer Michael Sullivan, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

The child's mother was struck in her face during the argument but refused medical treatment, Sullivan said.

Police said the father was taken to a hospital for self-inflicted injuries but later released into police custody, and charges are pending.
