CHICAGO — An Austin man was charged in the 2012 murder of a Humboldt Park man, police said Thursday.

Mario Ortega, 19, was charged with first-degree murder in connection to a fatal shooting of 25-year-old Efrain Cruz.

Ortega, of the 4600 block of West Ohio Street, was arrested Tuesday after being identified as the person who shot Cruz, police said. He was charged with first-degree murder, and appeared in court Thursday.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Cruz was in the backyard of his home in the 3200 block of West LeMoyne Street in Humboldt Park on the night of Sept. 20, 2012, when someone opened fire, fatally striking him.
