WEST TOWN — An oyster bar isn't the only new addition coming to fast-developing Chicago Avenue this month.

With this week's dual openings of a coffee shop and art gallery on the southeast corner of Chicago Avenue and Paulina Street, West Town residents and tourists can enjoy coffee "pourovers" and espresso, as well as shop for modern art and mod furniture.

Asado Coffee Roasters plans to open Friday at 1651 W. Chicago Ave.  The coffee shop's neighbor, Treva Gallery, opened a few days ago at 1653 W. Chicago Ave.

The West Town storefront will be second location for the Irving Park-based nanoroaster, which uses organic sustainable farmed coffee and received the Chicago Reader's Best Coffee Roaster award in 2010.

Asado Coffee Roastery at 1651 W. Chicago Ave. plans to open this week, according to its Facebook page.

"We roast in every location everyday. No shortcuts ever," said co-owner Jeff Liberman, referring to the fact the coffee shop makes each cup individually using a handcrafted pourover method.

Founded by Kevin Ashtari, Asado Coffee Co. opened at 1432 W. Irving Park Road five years ago. In addition to the new location, the company is also planning to expand to 22 E. Jackson Blvd. in the Loop in the fall, with the third venture to be named "Asado Coffee Pickwick Lane Roastery," Liberman said.

The espresso drinks at Asado will be made using a machine called The Mirage.

Ashtari said the machine, manufactured by Kees van der Western, is "known throughout the coffee world as the holy grail of machines."

In addition to coffee, Asado plans to sell whole beans, handcrafted pastries and baked goods. It's also currently seeking input from neighbors on its hours of operation but tentatively is planning to be open from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Adjacent to Asado, the Treva Gallery is a relocation of an existing art gallery that was at 2523 N. Halsted Ave. but now includes furniture, too.

"This is all collectible museum quality furniture, not knock-off, the real deal," said curator Matt Rachman.

Furniture currently for sale at the gallery includes a metal Pierre Cardin coffee table with a square in the center that can be used as a dry bar for liquor or a planter; bright yellow and blue Eames chairs; and plastic boulders from the 1970s that rest on the floor and function as lamps.

Rachman and business partner Efrain Lopez will be responsible for selling the gallery's mid-century era furniture and home furnishing, while painters Danielle Monet Morse and Gary Dolgikh, who goes by the name "Gary D," are providing the gallery's artwork.
