CHICAGO — A doctor was sentenced to 18 years in prison for sexually assaulting a pregnant patient in 2002.

Cook County Judge Clayton Crane sentenced Bruce S. Smith Tuesday, after the doctor was convicted of two counts of criminal sexual assault in January.

"He was somebody I trusted. He delivered my son," the woman said on the witness stand in January. She was eight months pregnant with her second child at the time of the incident.

The woman testified that she had gone to see Smith — who also has been accused of rape by other women — more than a decade ago, complaining of pressure in her swollen belly. Smith was able to ease the pressure, possibly by turning the baby inside her, she told jurors.

Still laying on the examination table, her feet in stirrups, she claimed Smith put his hands on each of her knees and raped her.

Prosecutors said after the incident, the victim left the office and contacted police. A rape test was administered that same day.

Smith was charged in 2010 when the case was reopened and Smith's DNA was identified in evidence, prosecutors said.
