WEST ENGLEWOOD — Two men who broke into a West Englewood home got a surprise when they were met by the 53-year-old homeowner armed with a gun, police said.

Police said the two men, ages 19 and 23, forced their way into a home in the 5500 block of South Laflin Street about 2:25 p.m. Wednesday.

Once inside, they were confronted by the homeowner, who fired shots at them, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.

The 19-year-old man was shot in his buttocks, and the 23-year-old man broke his leg while trying to flee the home, police said.

The two were taken into custody and brought to area hospitals to be treated for their injuries.

Criminal charges against the two burglars are pending, Alfaro said. But police said the homeowner is unlikely to face charges.
