NORTH PARK — The director of "Platoon," "JFK," "Nixon" and "W." is coming to Northeastern Illinois University to present an alternate version of U.S. history, as only Oliver Stone can.

Stone and historian Peter Kuznick, a professor at American University, will pay a visit to NEIU's campus on Thursday to talk about their recent Showtime series, "The Untold History of the United States," which aired in 2012 and has just been released on Blu-ray.

The 10-part series covers the decades between World War II and the first Obama administration, revisiting moments in U.S. history when better decisions could have been made, Kuznick told the New York Times.

If Harry Truman hadn't become president, for example, “There would not have been this cold war. There would have been the continuation of the Roosevelt-Stalin working out of things. Vietnam wouldn’t have happened," said Stone, also speaking to the Times.

The free, public discussion is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. in the university's auditorium, 5500 N. St. Louis Ave. (see map). Following a Q&A session with the audience, Stone and Kuznick will sign copies of the "Untold History" DVD and its companion book.

Street parking is available adjacent to campus; attendees can also purchase a $5 permit for the university's lots and parking garage.
