UPTOWN — A 25-year-old man is in serious condition after he was shot in his stomach in Uptown Monday afternoon.
The shooting occurred about 3:45 p.m. in the 4700 block of North Beacon Street, according to Officer Amina Greer, a police spokeswoman.
The man was sitting in a car when a gunman walked up and opened fire, Greer said. The victim managed to run away, but not before being shot in his stomach.
He was taken in serious condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
No one was in custody as of Monday evening, Greer said.
Neighbors on Monday recalled hearing four or five loud pops when the shooting occurred.
"When I heard about it, I flipped out," said Steve Brandstedet, 36, a father of two who has lived on the street for seven years. "The time it happened — my kids would've been coming home from school."
Brandstedet said the timing was "disheartening" and he hopes the shooting was "just an isolated event."
"East of here, there's always stuff — but our block is usually quiet," said Jenna, 29, who lives on the block but declined to give her last name. "It just makes you feel very unsafe. No one wants to feel unsafe in your neighborhood."
Jenna said since news of the shooting broke, she's considered moving, but "it's tough because I own."
