IRVING PARK — Facing a $600,000 budget deficit in the wake of Chicago Public Schools' new per-pupil funding system, Murphy Elementary made the tough decision to discontinue its band program.

The community is now rallying around the school to keep the music playing.

The Greater Independence Park Neighborhood Association is throwing a wine, cheese and beer party to raise money for Murphy's band. The goal is to collect the $10,000 needed to pay for the program through the end of the school year.

When the cuts were initially announced, Roberta Salas, chairwoman of Murphy's Local School Council, told DNAinfo Chicago: "For many of these kids, this is the only place they're going to get fine arts. They can't afford private lessons."

The "And the Band Played On ..." fundraiser is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Saturday at the Abbey Pub, 3420 W. Grace St. In addition to wine, cheese and beer, the event also includes a raffle, silent auction and a special performance by the Murphy band.

Tickets are $40 if bought in advance or $45 at the door. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit the Independence Park farmers market.
