Police Sergeant Shoots Gunman After Witnessing Shooting

CHICAGO — A Chicago Police sergeant who witnessed gunfire in Roseland Sunday night shot one of the gunmen, according to a statement from police.

The uniformed sergeant was responding to a call of a domestic disturbance when he saw two people firing shots at each other in the 1000 block of South State Street about 8:25 p.m., according to police.

He told them he was a cop, and one of the shooters turned toward the sergeant with a gun in his hand, according to the statement. The sergeant told the man to drop the gun, but he refused, so the sergeant fired his gun and hit the man in the foot, according to police.

The gunman was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and a gun was recovered, according to the statement. His age was not available.

Officers responding to the shooting were involved in a crash near the scene, according to police and the Fire Department. Three officers involved in the crash were taken to area hospitals in good condition, according to the Fire Department.
