EDGEWATER — Water in the 6100 block of North Sheridan Road is now safe to drink, officials said.

Tom LaPorte, Department of Water Management assistant commissioner, said the water was tested and cleared for consumption after a cracked water main Monday triggered a mandatory order to boil water.

The city continues its work to replace 2,837 feet of an 8-inch water main between Thorndale Avenue and West Sheridan Road.

The old pipes were installed in the 1890s.

As crews were working on a pipe serving water to Kindred Hospital Monday, the main on the other side of the street cracked, according to a letter sent to residents by LaPorte.

"The test is a standard practice, and there was no feeling that contamination had taken place," LaPorte wrote in a letter to residents Tuesday night.
