WRIGLEYVILLE — A firefighter was taken to a local hospital for evaluation after heat-related injuries while responding to a blaze in Wrigleyville Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
The fire started in a 2½-story building in the 3600 block of North Wayne Avenue sometime before 12:45 p.m., according to the Chicago Fire Department.
Firefighters managed to put out the blaze by about 1:20 p.m., the Fire Department said.
A firefighter was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition to be evaluated, the Fire Department said.
Fire officials later said the man's injuries were related to heat exhaustion and dehydration, and he was released from the hospital.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no one else was injured, according to the Fire Department.
Amy and Bob Newton-Pisani have lived in the now-destroyed home for 25 years, Amy's brother Fred Newton said at the scene of the fire.
Newton said his sister's two kids attended local Catholic schools, and he went to "scores" of christenings and Christmases in the now destroyed home.
Newton said his sister and brother-in-law are distraught over sentimental things lost in the fire.
"Screw the refrigerator," Newton said. "It's the memories, the pictures of kids."
