NORTH LAWNDALE — A Chicago Police officer was injured while helping a man escape a fire in the Harrison Court Apartments in North Lawndale on Friday morning, authorities said.

The 31-year-old officer from the Harrison District helped the 60-year-old man escape from his fourth-floor apartment.

The officer was taken to Rush University Medical Center in good condition, while the 60-year-old was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.

The fire occurred at 3:27 a.m. at the apartment complex in the 2900 block of West Harrison Street and was caused by "careless use of smoking material in presence of medical equipment," Langford said.

Residents have been allowed back into the apartment.

In an unrelated incident, a fire around midnight in the 7100 block of South Laflin in Englewood injured one man. He was treated on scene and not hospitalized. Fire officials did not know how old he was.
