COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A 40-year-old Chicago Lawn man who told authorities he felt overcharged for his Chevy Malibu rental car was arrested this week for allegedly stealing the car.

Steve Scott was pulled over by police Tuesday in the 7100 block of South Indiana Avenue for not wearing a seatbelt, authorities said.

When they checked the car registration, police realized the Malibu was reported stolen by PV Holding Corporation in Orland Park, authorities said.

Scott allegedly told police he had rented the car in July and that "it's like three weeks overdue of being returned," according to court records. He said he'd paid $800 to the car rental company and that the rate was $239 per week.

Scott believed he had been overcharged, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said Wednesday during a brief bond hearing.

Scott told police he had spoken with "Linn, the budget manager," who had said that car would be reported stolen if not returned by Tuesday, according to court records. But he then spoke to "Andre, the repo guy," and made arrangements to have the car picked up.

Scott, of the 6200 block of South Talman Avenue, was ordered held on $50,000 bond Wednesday. The charges against him include failing to wear a seatbelt, driving without a license and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
