CHICAGO — Wacker Elementary School in Washington Heights was placed under lockdown Thursday afternoon after a woman was shot down the street from the school, school officials said.

The shooting occurred about 2:52 p.m. in the 1000 block of West 97th Street, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

The 18-year-old woman told police she was walking with a man when she heard gunshots and felt pain in her right calf.

She was sent to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park where she is in "stable" condition.

"The principal took the proper precautions and called CPD immediately," according to a Chicago Public Schools statement. "The school then went into soft lockdown, keeping students in the building until CPD was able to canvass the area around the school and determine that it was safe."

The shooting occurred just before dismissal. Parents who came to the school to pick up their children were taken to the gym for a security measure.

Wacker is not among the schools with a designated Safe Passage route.

The woman was likely not an intended target, police said.
