CHICAGO — A man was shot in Englewood just more than a block away away from an elementary school Thursday afternoon, police said.

The 23-year-old man was shot in his buttocks and his leg in the 6400 block of South May Street about 12:22 p.m., said Officer Veejay Zala, a police spokesman, who was citing preliminary information.

The shooting happened a block or so away from Bass Elementary School, located at 1140 W. 66th St. The incident did not happen along a Safe Passage route, police said.

The man was in "stable" condition, Zala said, though information about what hospital he was taken to was not immediately available.

No students or Chicago Public Schools staff were injured, according to Zala.

In Washington Heights, in the 9100 block of South Laflin Avenue, a 47-year-old man was shot in the back around 2:30, police said. No more information was available.
