CHICAGO — A man was reported missing after he took a raft out onto Lake Michigan Tuesday night on the South Side, police said.

The 54-year-old man was with his brother out on the lakefront near 57th Street in the Hyde Park neighborhood, said Officer John Mirabelli, a police spokesman.

The man decided to go out on the lake with a small raft while his brother stayed behind and fell asleep, Mirabelli said. When his brother woke up, the man was gone, Mirabelli said.

The brother called police sometime after 9:45 p.m., according to Mirabelli.

A police marine unit and the Chicago Fire Department began searching for the man but couldn't find him. They temporarily stopped searching about 12:45 a.m., but crews began looking for the man again about 9 a.m. and have continued the search during the day, police said.
