U. of C. Named Ninth Best University in the World

HYDE PARK — The University of Chicago is one of the top 10 universities in the world, according to a new global ranking.

The U of C was judged to be ninth best on the planet according to the annual ranking by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

The ranking is based on a variety of criteria, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, research performance, and cited research in papers published in professional journals.

This year marks the 10th year in a row that U of C has made the top 10 list.

In subject fields, the U of C ranked No. 2 in economics/business and No. 9 in physics.

The list was led by Harvard University at No. 1. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was 25th and Northwestern was ranked No. 30.
