Would-Be Mugger Beats Woman With Belt in Mag Mile, Prosecutors Say

CHICAGO — A witness thwarted a Magnificent Mile robbery Sunday morning after seeing a West Garfield Park man attack a woman with a belt, police said.

Kawame Jaco, 22, approached a 36-year-old woman in the 800 block of North Michigan Avenue about 7:27 a.m. Sunday and demanded money from her, police said.

The woman told police that she was sitting on a bench in the park at when Jaco came up and asked her to give him money, according to court records.

The woman refused, and Jaco allegedly took off his belt, hitting her with in numerous times.

She started screaming. Jaco started running, according to court records.

Bobby Williams, a 47-year-old South Side man who works downtown at a nearby condominium, saw the attack, according to court documents.

He chased after Jaco, apprehended him and held him until police arrived.

Jaco was charged with attempted armed robbery, aggravated battery in a public place and for violating conditions of his bond.
