CHICAGO — The man who allegedly fatally shot his estranged wife and 5-year-old daughter before turning the gun on himself in Little Village early Tuesday has died, officials said.

Police found a 5-year-old girl and a 28-year-old woman fatally shot inside a home in the 2800 block of South Kildare Avenue about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, police said. A man was also found with a gunshot wound to his head and was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

The alleged gunman, 28-year-old Juan Eguez, died at 11:07 a.m. Wednesday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

The two victims, both shot in the head, were identified as Carla Eguez, 5, and Kelly Coca, 28, authorities said.

Family members of the slain mother and daughter said Eguez, who lives in Miami, was the little girl's father, and he and Coca were estranged and planned to divorce.

Eguez served in the Army for three years and earned several medals for achievement and good conduct, according to the Army.

But he also had a temper, said Claudio Cossio, Coca's nephew.

"He was kind of crazy," Cossio said Tuesday. "Last time I met him, he attacked one of my family members, and we had to call police."

Eguez was charged with domestic battery in January 2011 in Cook County, according to court records. In that case, he was ordered held on $10,000 bond.
